Have you experienced fear? I mean true fear….the kind of fear that cripples your movement, thoughts, and hinders daily life? Me too. Read about my story and how I overcame fear and stepped into God’s promise of freedom…
One summer when I was in college, my friend, Tonya, invited me to spend a couple of weeks with her and her parents in Hereford, Texas. This is a small town where, you guessed it, the cows outnumber the people! I had visited the town many times with my friend and looked forward to an extended visit.
On the 4th of July, we enjoyed our day soaking up the sun and spending time with her old high school friends that lived in town. That evening, after a night of lighting fireworks and celebrating the holiday, we returned to her home. Her parents were already asleep, but we decided to stay up a while longer watching a movie and lying on the couch. A while later we made our way to her bedroom and went to sleep in her comfortable queen-sized bed. Then something happened….
Tonya was awoken as she felt the blankets being pulled off of our bed. When she opened her eyes, she saw the outline of a person standing at the bottom corner of the bed on the side where I was sleeping. There was no mistaking that there was indeed a man in the bedroom as he was standing in front of a window that glowed from a porch light, highlighting a silhouette of a man wearing a jacket and a cap.
I then awoke as Tonya began to kick and scream. I thought she was having a nightmare, so I tried to calm her down and “wake her up.” Until I soon realized, she was not dreaming. She continued to plead with the stranger to leave, while kicking, and then she began pulling the blankets up over our heads.
I did not move, or scream, or speak. I did not turn around to see the intruder. I was frozen with crippling fear. After what seemed like an eternity, Tonya watched the stranger walk out of the bedroom and toward the door to leave the home. We simultaneously ran toward the back of the home where her parents met us half way.
Once we were able to calm down to explain what we had just experienced, Tonya’s father inspected the home and confirmed that the stranger was gone. We then contacted the police and filed a report. The police suggested possible gang-related activity was the cause of the the crime, and agreed that we were indeed fortunate that nothing else had happened.
Freedom From Fear
I would like to say that I immediately felt safe and secure after this event, but that was not the case. I was scared. I was crippled with fear for months. I was a 19-year-old woman who could not sleep with the lights off, or alone, or even be left alone during the daytime without being afraid.
But then…..God. God reminded me that He was there. He was there to protect me and comfort me. We do not know what the stranger was there to do…..but he just walked away. HE WALKED AWAY. The bible says:
- No harm comes to the godly, but the wicked have their fill of trouble. Proverbs 12:21
- But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
- For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler… Psalms 91:3
- Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me. Psalm 138:7
- The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. 2 Timothy 4:18
- The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. Psalm 121:7
- You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Psalm 32:7
- My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. 2 Samuel 22:3-4
God protected Tonya and I that night. And just as God was there on that terrifying night with me, God wants to remind us that He never leaves us or forsakes us (Deuteronomy 31:6). Do you recall a time of crippling fear, a painful event, or perhaps something you may have done that you are ashamed of? God was there and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17). He knows every detail, and He wants to set you free. Jesus died on the cross so we can be free. Jesus did not die for us so we can “get by.” Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom He set us free.” One of my favorite songs by Darrell Evans helps us to declare our freedom…click here to watch and listen!
I tell you this story, not to alarm you or cause fear, but to rejoice and give the glory to God for His mighty protection over his people! God is faithful. He loves you, and He wants you to be free. I encourage you to speak these words out loud when you feel afraid, guilty, or oppressed in any way, “It is for freedom He set me free, I am free!”
Prayer: Lord, thank you for Your freedom. I ask you to help me to let go of all fear, guilt, pain, and doubt in my life. I fully receive your healing and freedom through Christ Jesus. I proclaim that I AM FREE in Jesus’ name. Amen.
