Have you ever been in a place where things are falling into place perfectly in your life only to have a “life bomb” drop and explode in your face? Maybe you had a wonderful job, a loving companion, you were healthy, or a loving support system of friends and family. Then something happened….you were in pain, disappointed and upset. I have been there too.
I was hit by one of these bombs several years ago and was confiding in a friend of mine. It was at that time that God gave her a vision, or a picture in her mind of my situation that changed my perspective drastically. She began to describe what she saw:
I was riding a bicycle when suddenly the bicycle wheel fell off. I was upset and angry about it….until I looked ahead to see I was at the edge of a cliff. If the bicycle wheel had not fallen off, I would have ridden off the cliff!
In these interruptions, I want to assure you, God is there. Maybe we see the interruption as taking us off course….but perhaps it’s strategically placed in our lives as a part of God’s perfect plan! I am not suggesting that God causes all the bad things in our lives to happen, he does not. But regardless of where these disappointments come from, God is there. He wants to comfort us, teach us, and love us through the hard times in our lives. John 16:33 says, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
The bible says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” Philippians 4:6. Are you mad at God? He understands, tell Him how mad you are! He wants to hear from you even if it is in anger toward Him.
Think of it from a parent’s perspective, if your child is angry at you, how do you approach the situation? Do you disown your child because he/she is mad at you? NO! You love them and try to help them understand the situation, right? If your child is angry at you, it does not change the love you have for them. And how many times do we look back and see that the parent was protecting us? God has a bigger view of our lives. He knows what is best for us and wants us to follow and trust him, especially in the interruptions.
Guess who else is in the interruptions trying to keep you from trusting God….our enemy, the devil. The devil knows that it is in these interruptions and disappointments that we come out stronger. It is in these situations that we find our strength and victory! It is so important that during these times that we keep our focus on God. The devil will try to make us think that God has abandoned us during these times…haven’t we all felt like that before? God is always with us! God says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6.
The bicycle story has forever changed my perspective when things “go wrong.” I want to encourage you to use this picture of a bicycle with a broken wheel to help you see things in a different way next time you are hit with a life bomb. It may not make it less painful, but draw close to God to seek His perspective. I guarantee God will bring you peace in your situation! I want to leave you with a powerful verse from Psalms 91:1, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
